3-Tab Shingle Installation: What Gainesville Homeowners Need to Know
If you’re a homeowner in Gainesville or nearby communities like Dawsonville, Oakwood, or Flowery Branch, you’ve probably seen a roof or two covered in traditional 3-tab shingles. They’re one of the most cost-effective and common choices across North Georgia — but that doesn’t mean every roofer installs them right.
Here at L&L Roofing & Construction, we believe every roof deserves quality craftsmanship, no matter the material. Let’s walk through what it takes to get a proper 3-tab shingle installation done — the right way.
What Are 3-Tab Shingles?
Three-tab shingles are a type of asphalt roofing shingle made from a fiberglass mat and topped with weather-resistant granules. Each shingle has three equal-sized tabs, giving it a clean, uniform appearance.
They’re lighter and more affordable than architectural shingles, but they require precision in layout and fastening to ensure long-term performance.
Step-by-Step: How We Install 3-Tab Shingles
1. Deck Prep
- Inspect for rot or soft spots. Replace any damaged decking.
- Confirm the surface is clean, dry, and securely fastened.
2. Underlayment and Drip Edge
- For homes in Gainesville’s moderate-to-high rainfall zones, we install #15 asphalt-saturated felt or a synthetic underlayment over the decking.
- Drip edge goes:
- Under the underlayment at the eaves.
- Over the underlayment at the rakes.
- All fastened every 8–10 inches using corrosion-resistant nails.
3. Starter Strip
- We either use pre-manufactured starter shingles or create them by cutting tabs off standard shingles.
- Starter strip overhangs the drip edge by ½ inch at the eaves to direct water away from the fascia.
4. Shingle Layout
- We snap chalk lines every few courses to maintain proper alignment.
- A 6-inch offset pattern is used, but adjustments are made to avoid tiny slivers at rakes — those don’t fasten well and often lead to blow-offs.
- If the roof is out of square or the ridge sags, we adjust exposures slightly (⅛” per course) to even things out visually.
5. Nailing
- We use galvanized roofing nails, 4 per shingle minimum — or 6 for high-wind areas.
- Nails are placed just below the sealant strip and above the cutouts, one inch in from each edge.
- Proper depth matters — nails should be flush, not overdriven or crooked.
6. Flashing and Valleys
- Closed-cut or open-metal valleys depending on roof pitch and homeowner preference.
- Step flashing installed at all walls, chimneys, or roof intersections.
7. Ventilation and Final Inspection
- We always check that attic ventilation is adequate (this helps prevent premature shingle failure).
- Every shingle, flashing, and seal gets a final check before we clean up.
Why Correct Installation Matters
3-tab shingles are more vulnerable to wind damage than laminated shingles — especially if the tabs aren’t bonded well or the layout leaves narrow strips at the edges. A poor install can lead to blow-offs, leaks, and costly repairs within just a few seasons.
We’ve seen it happen. That’s why we take the time to do it right — every time.
FAQ
How long do 3-tab shingles last in Gainesville?
Typically 15–25 years, depending on ventilation, slope, and exposure. Proper installation can make or break longevity.
Do I need to replace my roof if only a few shingles are missing?
Not necessarily. If the underlayment is intact and it’s caught early, spot repairs might do the trick.
Can I mix 3-tab and architectural shingles?
We don’t recommend it. They differ in thickness, appearance, and installation methods.
